Main Page error reports

To report an error in current or upcoming Main Page content, please add it to the appropriate section below.

  • Where is the error? An exact quotation of all or part of the text in question will help.
  • Please offer a correction if possible.
  • References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
  • Time zones: The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 09:16 on 29 November 2023), not adjusted to your local time zone.
  • Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not give you a faster response; it is unnecessary as this page is not protected and will in fact cause problems if used here. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
  • Done? Once an error has been fixed, rotated off the Main Page or acknowledged not to be an error, the report will be removed from this page; please check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken, as no archives are kept.
  • No chit-chat: Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the relevant article or project talk page.
  • Please respect other editors. A real person wrote the blurb or hook for which you are suggesting a fix, or a real person noticed what they honestly believe is an issue with the blurb or hook that you wrote. Everyone is interested in creating the best Main Page possible; with the compressed time frame, there is sometimes more stress and more opportunities to step on toes. Please be civil to fellow users.
  • Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, consider first attempting to fix the problem there before reporting it here if necessary. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. In addition, upcoming content is typically only protected from editing 24 hours before its scheduled appearance; in most cases, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.

Current DYK

Newburgh, Dutchess and Connecticut Railroad says nothing about anything being stolen. (How do you steal an entire railroad? You can't just pick it up and carry it away.) The language also didn't say anything about stealing, thievery, robbery, etc. when it was nominated for DYK. Please remove it or add a new hook. Perhaps:

...that the U.S. federal government refused to allow part of the Newburgh, Dutchess and Connecticut Railroad to become a rail trail?

136 characters including the markup. Source for the hook is the end of the "Abandonment" section. Nyttend (talk) 09:06, 29 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Today's POTD

  • I have made some late edits made to the unprotected version – for convenience, please copy the code at User:Ravenpuff/sandbox/POTD. Thanks! — RAVENPVFF · talk · 00:22, 28 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • State Fair blurb - In last sentence "This poster was produced for the Twentieth Century–Fox Film Corporation for the 1933 theatrical release of State Fair.", the organisation should be Fox Film.
The pipe linked 20th Century Studios was not formed until 1935. The film was released in February 1933. 20th Century Studios was a merger of Fox Film and Twentieth Century Pictures whose first film was The Bowery (film) released in October 1933.
Even though at the bottom of the actual image it has a 20th Century Fox logo, that appears to have been pasted on, possibly when the copyright line (in tiny print line within the white border) was added to the poster in MCMXXXVI (1936) ie after the merger.
That line also seems to credit the poster to "Tooker - Moore" (painter George Tooker - DC Moore Gallery?) Adam is that enough to change "Poster credit: unknown" to Tooker? JennyOz (talk) 06:18, 28 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@JennyOz: Looking on Google gives several results for "Tooker-Moore Lithography Company". I'm hesitant to ascribe authorship to them, as it's possible that they were only responsible for printing the poster, not designing it. Speaking of this, I suggest that we remove "original copyright [...]" in the credit line, since this is generally omitted in POTD and also probably incorrect as above. — RAVENPVFF · talk · 00:16, 29 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks Ravenpuff, but what about the last sentence of the blurb per above? The poster wasn't produced for a 1933 film for a studio which formed 1935? JennyOz (talk) 04:39, 29 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I've removed both those bits.  — Amakuru (talk) 07:40, 29 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Tomorrow's POTD

That POTD is still missing. 18 hours to go. Art LaPella (talk) 05:56, 29 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'll get something in place in the next hour or so. Apologies.  — Amakuru (talk) 07:43, 29 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

General discussion

Wikipedia:Main Page history

I like using Wikipedia:Main Page history, but it has not been written for a number of days now, look at Wikipedia:Main Page history/2023 November 20. The bot owner made only few edits, one saying that the bot can't do it in retrospect (which I sort of thought anyway). What can we do? Once I'm hear: could a bot perhaps change earlier renditions which look strange, due to changes in the presentation, compare Wikipedia:Main Page history/2018 November 23 (look at the "Recents") and Wikipedia:Main Page history/2020 November 20? -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:21, 21 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

It can be done manually fairly easily for the current main page, using special:ExpandTemplates with {{:Main Page}} in the input wikitext box, then copy-pasting the output into the relevant history page. I've done that for Wikipedia:Main Page history/2023 November 24, and happy to do it for a few days, until the bot starts running again. It is possible to do it retrospectively by rebuilding a copy of the main page in a sandbox, transcluding older templates (ITN needs to be done manually), but it is a time-consuming task.
